Spartans Come Up Short During First Home Game

Spartans lose in their home opener, but look forward to the new year.

In the home opener on Friday December 14th, the Spartans, 2-5, hosted the state ranked D’Evelyn Jaguars, 6-1, and came up short, losing 81-43.

The Jaguars started off with a quick lead during the first quarter, outscoring the Spartans 26-14 and kept the lead for the rest of the game. The Jaguars were 29% from the field versus the Spartans who were at 15%.  “It was obvious they were a better shooting team, but our girls worked really hard and never gave up throughout the whole game,” said Head Coach Damion Allen. The Spartans caught up at half time but still couldn’t pull off the win.  The Spartans are now 2-6.

The team worked together and scored 43 points and had 33 rebounds. The leading scorer, Sophomore Essence Reese – with 21 points – talked about how hard everyone worked. “We did good as a team.  They were a better offensive team and they won, but we worked really hard,” she said.

The girls don’t have a game until after break against Kent Denver, but plan on working a lot on defense and offense. “We want to turn this season around and go undefeated in 2013,” said Junior Kessanet Negash.
