Summer Salutations

Posted 06/01/2017 by Lucy Peterson

As another successful school year comes to a close, students prepare for an exciting summer break.

The 2016-2017 school year held an abundance of accomplishments for TJ, both academically and in athletics. TJ won one of the High School Academic Growth Awards for the outstanding growth in reading, writing, and math among students in Colorado, and was ranked the 28th best high school in Colorado. This was Mike Christoff’s first year as principal of TJ after the departure of Suzanne Morris-Sherer last year. “Being here for the last six years as assistant principal made the transition much easier, and Mrs. Morris-Sherer set it up very well for me, and allowed me to take ownership for a lot of things last year which made for a natural progression to me becoming the principal,” mentioned Christoff.

Multiple TJ sports made it to state including volleyball, softball, basketball, girls’ swim and dive, baseball, and track and field. This was the first time in three years volleyball has reached state and the second time in school history, the first time in nine years that baseball made it to state, and the first time in ten years that softball has played in the state championship game. TJ alumnus Kyle Freeland started in his first MLB game with the Colorado Rockies and has represented TJ sports with flying colors. Overall, the school was a prominent force in athletics, representing TJ and DPS in the state tournaments.

Because the year is coming to a successful close, students are able to enjoy the summer sun and take a break from their classes. For all classes, however, students should be reminded that each teacher has assigned summer homework that should be completed before students arrive back for the 2017-2018 school year. Seniors should also remember they must visit counselors before the school year begins to sign their Senior Statement and learn about important dates and deadlines regarding college applications.
