SPECIAL PROGRAMS OFFERED TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The special programs that are offered to students to receive
credit other than the traditional classes are:
-
Career Education Center: This
program offers students the opportunity to explore more than twenty-one
unique programs. DPS provides buses from all the high schools to CEC. There
are morning and afternoon sessions. It is important that the students take
his/her required courses at his/her home school, and go to CEC as the home
schedule permits. The favorites of this program are Culinary Arts, Auto
Mechanics, Commercial Arts, Fire Science, Audio Engineering... . Some classes
are opened to ninth graders, but most of the classes are for tenth-twelfth
grades.
- Post-Secondary Options: This Program is
offered to juniors and seniors who are in good standing with approved credits,
and have a GPA of 2.5, or higher. These students are allowed to enroll, and
take one, or two college courses each semester, and get high school credit
as well as college credit if he/she passes the class. Fast Track
is available for those seniors who have 220 credits, and must have all graduation
requirements completed in order to qualify. If you pass the class with a C,
or better, DPS will reimburse you the tuition of the class.
- Executive Internship:
Is an opportunity for juniors and seniors to work in a career area
of their choice, and earn up to fifteen hours of credit. Students have been
placed at radio stations, newspaper offices, dance and theater companies,
as well as law and doctor's offices. There are almost no boundaries as far
as placement is concerned. The student would come to school part of the day
for their classes, and the other part of the day he/she would go to their
internship. The coordinator of the internship program is housed at the Career
Education Center. Part of the program entails, required meetings with the
student, a resume, journal entries, and site visits by the coordinator.
- Balarat: There are two ways in which high
school students can earn credit through Balarat. 1) The Balarat resident counselor
program (10-12 graders) provides an opportunity for students to earn elective
credit while assisting with the delivery of outdoor education experiences
for fifth graders. It is an opportunity for individuals to utilize leadership
skills, apply information garnered in the classroom, and develop management
and communication proficiencies. The student will receive five credits if
he/she is accepted to the program. 2) The Balarat Eco-Seminar Internship Semester
offers the student(junior/seniors only) the opportunity to pursue their education
in a non-traditional setting. If the student is accepted to this program he/she
does not attend his/her home school, but goes to Bradley where Balarat offices
are located. Students in this program need to have all their academic requirements
met prior to enrolling in this program. He/she will receive 35 credit hours
through this experience.
