TJ’s slow start results in another loss as they fall to the Chaparrel Wolves, 45-19.

On Saturday, September 11th, the Spartan Football team took to the confines of their home field for the first time of the season, but lost to the Chaparrel Wolves with a score of 45-19.
The Spartans again had difficulties with starting off sluggish, and fell behind to their opponent early in the first quarter. The Chaparrel Wolves had their first scoring drive of the game in the first five minutes of the half, mostly gaining yardage through the air against the Spartan secondary. Offensively, the Spartans came out running the ball in the first half against the Wolves’ defense, but were unable to convert enough yardage for a touchdown, with several runs by Quarterback Brandon Gonzales and Running Back Lonnie Hampton. In the last few minutes of the second quarter, the Spartans were able to put some points on the scoreboard with a passing touchdown from Gonzales to his Junior Wide Receiver target, Antonio Clark. At the end of the first half, the Spartans found themselves in a deep hole with a somber score of 24-7.
In the second half, the Spartans again seemed to settle into their game and play more to their strengths on both offense and defense. Hampton was able to keep his two game scoring streak, getting another touchdown on the ground running into the end zone. Quarterback Brandon Gonzales also added to the Spartans’ point total in the second half. The Spartan Defense was also able to slow down the Wolves’ stampeding offense with some impressive defensive schemes. Line Backer Ryan Colean recorded four tackles in a row, stopping the Wolves’ drive practically single-handedly.
Senior Lineman John Jones says,” Right now our poor teamwork is the only thing holding us back. We just need to come together as a team to get a win.” The Spartans look to turn their luck around next week and come together as a team against Heritage High School away from home turf. The game will be Thursday, September 16th at Heritage, and kick off will be at 7:00 p.m. Make sure to catch the team in action!
