Wrestlers Finish Eighth

The wrestling team competed in the Mountain Vista Survivor Series in hopes of starting the season off right.

The Spartan Wrestlers went to Mountain Vista High School with the goal of beating their competitors and gaining experience. The event lasted from Friday the 3^rd till Saturday the 4^th, and was the beginning of the team’s hopefully successful season.

“We didn’t do as well as we hoped for, but we expected to have some tough competition. However, we did beat Gateway, Columbine, and Moffat County schools,” said Head Coach Mike Laurita. The guys overall placed 8^th and had great matches that gave the boys an opportunity to shine.

The wrestlers that had some of the best scores on Friday and Saturday include Layth Dieyleh, Tra Holcomb, Noel Estrada, and Joe Johnson. The team had a record of 7-3 for the whole series. Even though unexpected problems occurred, with Estrada not making weight for the second day of the competition and four forfeits because there were not enough players, the team was still able to pull through and place.

“It was unfortunate and disappointing when I did not make weight on the second day of the Survival Series. It was sad to see others compete and me having to sit out. This is definitely something that cannot happen in the future,” said Estrada, a sophomore on the team.

The team hopes to get its season set on the right track as they take on Evergreen High School away on Wednesday, December 8th at 7:00 pm. make sure to catch your Spartan Wrestlers in action.
