Candy canes are sent out to spread the holiday glee.

Sweeten up the holidays by sending a surprise to a friend. This week Candy Cane Grams will be available for students and faculty members to send to each other. The grams will be sold during lunch in front of the main office from December 8th through the 10th. For a dollar, students and teachers can write a note and have a candy cane delivered to someone of their choice during his or her fourth period class on Monday the 13th or Tuesday the 14th.
Seniors Nicole Brown and Morgan Bruzas both say they wanted to brighten up everyone’s mood before finals and winter break. The duo took on the job as a project for leadership class. “It is a festive, fun thing to do right before break, and it puts a smile on people’s faces when they receive a candy cane,” said Brown. The grams can be sent to a friend, crush, teacher, loved one, or any other person found within the school.
These grams can also be a way to show support for a teacher, or to surprise a friend. “People love candy canes, or any sign that someone else cares. They are cute and easy,” said Bruzas. The small surprise is a simple way to check someone off the holiday shopping list.
Candy canes have continued to be recognized as an icon representing the holidays. The first candy cane was a white stick made of pure sugar; it has now turned into a striped hook-like shape that can be found in multitudes of colors and flavors. The hook shape came from the idea of a shepherd’s crook, which was handed out after church services, and used to decorate Yule trees. The stripes of colors run down the stick like tinsel down a Christmas tree. The most common flavor for the stick is the fresh-tasting mint flavor, decorated by the signature red and white stripes.
Save up some change TJ and stop buy the table on your way to lunch and send someone a tasty treat along with a sweet note to kick-off the holiday cheer.
