With all of the success the Lady Spartan softball team has had this year, they are still finding time to do community service.
On September 20, 2008 the ladies took time out of their Saturday afternoon to help out and clean up the TJ parking lot and trimmed the grass around the entrance of the school. Usually, when a team gathers together for the sake of school cleanliness, their efforts are out of punishment. Fortunately, this Spartan team decided to serve their school of their own free will, showing strong moral fiber and pride for their school.
Peggy Robinson, a parent who has an 8th grade child attending Hill Middle School, was the individual who stepped up and acknowledged the need for a Spartan clean-up after attending one of her son’s fall baseball events at TJ. She informed the administration and the softball ladies immediately stepped up to the task.
Junior Outfielder Stephanie Warren couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment after completing her duties as apart of the clean up. “I felt pretty good knowing that the school looks better because of us,” Warren said.
The TJ staff has taken notice of the noble attempts the softball team has made to tidy up the school. “I encourage the athletic teams to do community service, and what better way to fulfill that task than doing it here at TJ. Hopefully the other athletic teams can follow in the softball ladies lead,” said TJ Athletic Director Lani Nobles.
Coach Kyler Jackson was also pleased with the ladies and of their efforts in cleaning up the school. “I am proud that my team takes pride in their school at all levels of involvement,” Jackson stated. Not only should Coach Jackson be in high spirits because of his team’s overall character, but also with the their ability to back it up with successful play on the field.
With an undefeated record in league play, the Spartan softball squad has claimed their fourth straight City Championship and is looking to make a playoff run this October, starting with the first playoff game Saturday against Pueblo Centennial at 10 am, at TJ.
