TJ CTE Expert Danny Showers is recognized by the Rotary Club for his commitment in the community.
At the Fall Gala, For the Love of Children, Near and Far award ceremony, to be held on November 12, 2011, TJ’s very own Danny Showers will be honored with the DTC Rotary Self Above Service Award, because the Rotarians want the larger community to know about Showers’ commitment to young people and to recognize his involvement with the youth of the community.
The award not only honors Showers’ hard work with TJ’s Interact Club as advisor and liaison to the DTC Rotary Club, but also the many other things he does for Thomas Jefferson High School students. The DTC Rotary is part of a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all occupations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. The Interact Club, which is affiliated with the Rotary Club, is an organization at TJ that meets every Monday at lunch and is sponsored by Showers.
Along with his administrative duties for the CTE Department, Showers advises students everyday. “To me it’s all about working with kids and helping them get to the next level. I care about kids and their futures more than I care about myself,” he says.
In the CTE Department, one of Showers’ responsibilities is to be a resource for post secondary options. “Each year he helps kids get scholarships, financial aid, entrance to military academies and jobs,” says Business Teacher Matt Nicolo, “His heartfelt involvement with the youth in the community is continued day in and day out. “
Every day Showers has meetings with and helps any students with whatever they need. “I have my room opened before school, at lunch, and after school for students,” said Showers.
Showers says that helping students is the best thing he can do; he takes time out of his day everyday to help. “I think he is a great advisor; he helps us out, letting us know about anything we need to know, and offers scholarships to help us out,” says Senior Daniela Cordona.
Showers is also an Assistant DECA Advisor, Sponsor for Black Student Alliance, Coordinator for the Navy ROTC Scholarship Program, and a member of the Collaborative School Committee at Thomas Jefferson High School. “I do this not because I have to, but because I choose to. I love putting service to students above myself,” says Showers. As assistant DECA Advisor, Showers makes sure that each DECA student receives every opportunity he/she can. He provides them with many job opportunities, and works with seniors to help get them financial aid and scholarships. He coordinates with the Black Chamber of Commerce to assist students with job shadows. Showers also mentors students weekly, and he advises the Inspired Leaders of the Future Program through DU. “I want students to go far in life; far beyond high school,” says Showers.
