Boys March On

After a great defensive game, the Boys’ Hoop Squad finds themselves in the second round.

In a strong showing by TJ’s big men, the Spartans beat Silver Creek by a score of 52-32, with forward Trey Andres scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

TJ started very fast, and ended the first quarter with a score of 16-4 after the Spartans neutralized Silver Creek’s big man who scored the only four points for Creek, but missed more layups than he made. Silver Creek’s players seemed to calm down after the first quarter though and began playing a great second quarter, for which they are notorious. They scored 11 points and allowed only four points to the Spartans. TJ’s players and home crowd was out of spirit after the second quarter, as TJ only lead by five points.

As the Spartans came out of the locker room, they seemed re-energized and ready for the second half. That’s exactly what they were, as TJ went on another quick run before Silver Creek lost their composure. Creek’s big men were unable to make any shots they created, and every time they got the ball TJ recorded a steal of some kind. TJ’s Andres then took over the game, and put the team on his back. Andres was able to make a pull up jumper from three-point range and knock it in the hoop. He scored eight straight points for the Spartans at one stretch in the game.

TJ’s second-round opponent is Cheyenne Mountain, which posted a 17-6 record and is a three seed in the Spartans’ bracket. Cheyenne Mountain has gone .500 in their last four games, and hasn’t played a great defense in any of them.  The game will be played at the Pueblo State Fair at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, February 24.
