TJ moves to 4-0 in League, but sees blowout loss to Lakewood.
On April 4, after another homerun from Senior First Baseman Evan Walter and a first homerun from Sophomore Short Stop Cooper Bowermaster, TJ beat the Lincoln Lancers 15-5.
Sophomore Sam Reed had another great outing for the Spartans by pitching all five innings, and allowed six hits, and one earned run of the five that came across. Reed kept a shutout until the fourth inning when the Lancers were able to bring in a single run, and then four more were scored in the fifth inning. Yet, the offensive production was the big story line from this Lincoln game. Seven players in the TJ lineup had a hit, and five of the hitters had multiple hits. All together, the Spartans got 16 hits with six of them being extra-base hits.
As was mentioned, Walter had another big day at the plate. In three at-bats he had three hits, one a double and one a homerun. Walter also drove in five RBIs, bringing his season total to 35 after this game. Walter is on pace for 64 RBIs and 16 homeruns. The Spartans’ next game would be on April 6 against the Kennedy Commanders when they would try to bring back another league win.
TJ got another quality start out of Senior Brandon Gonzales who pitched five of the six innings and allowed five runs, with the Spartans winning a second straight game by the score of 15-5.
The Spartans had 17 hits in the game, and seven players had at least one hit for TJ. Walter once again brought his offense to the heart of the lineup, and hit another homerun with three more RBIs. Outfielder Reed, Catcher Zack Robinson, and second baseman Tyler Bybee also had great days at the plate with a combined eight RBIs and eight hits. TJ’s offense continued to click the entire game by scoring at least one run every inning and multiple runs in three of the six innings.
The offensive production wouldn’t continue though, as the Spartans hit a road block against the Lakewood Tigers on April 9th.
Bowermaster started the game for the Spartans and gave up three earned runs after three innings pitched, and TJ lost it in the fourth inning and went down with a final score of 14-0.
TJ kept it close going into the fourth inning, only down 4-0, but could not find offense anywhere. Walter and Bybee had the only two hits and both were singles. Bowermaster was pulled after struggling in the fourth inning, and couldn’t record a single out before allowing six more runs. Junior Issac Manzanares was brought in as relief, but he couldn’t find much success either. Manzanares was knocked around the yard by the Tigers, including a grand slam, which solidified the win for the Tigers.
TJ next plays the Montbello Warriors in another league game on April 10, and the Spartans hope to remain perfect.
