In the closest contested football game of the season, the Spartans lose by a single touchdown.
In a surprising performance by the back-up quarterback, Sophomore Obed Munoz, with two late touchdown passes, the Spartans still fell hard against Mitchell High School by a final score of 20-14.
Mitchell was a new foe for the Spartans, as the move to 3A has shown TJ a new class of schools. According to Senior placekicker Ty Roder, “(Mitchell) is a tight-knit school, and football is a big deal.”
The game opened slowly for the Spartans as Mitchell went up 6-0 quickly in the first quarter. “We didn’t come out and execute from beginning to end,” said Assistant Head Coach Matt Nicolo. Mitchell was also playing for their homecoming, and had extra motivation to beat the Spartans.
In the second half, the Spartan coaches knew the team needed an offensive spark. Munoz was then put into the game and performed very well for the team. “(Munoz) executed the plays when given the chance,” said Nicolo. “His receivers went up for the ball, and plays were put together.” The Spartans got two quick scores and were only down 20-14, but it was far too late in the game. “We came out overconfident and learned the hard way. Mitchell wasn’t intimidated by us, and if everyone was we would be 10-0 each year,” said Nicolo.
The next game for the Spartans is another new 3A opponent, Holy Family. The game will be on Saturday, October 6th, at 1:00 p.m. at All City Stadium. Holy Family enters the game at 3-1 and the Spartans approach the game at 3-2.
