The Spartan offense clicks again, and beats league opponent Denver North.
In a breakout performance by Senior receiver Katrell McAfee, who caught three touchdown passes, he helped the Spartans to a 34-14 win over DPS rival Denver North Vikings.
The weather conditions were brisk and windy throughout the entire game, but TJ came out of the gate and stunned North on the defensive side of the ball. The Spartans were able to stop the Vikings on the TJ 34 yard line on a turnover on downs, and deflated the North offense from the beginning. In TJ’s first offensive possession, a hand off to Sheik Kamara to the left side went for the first touchdown of the game, with a 55 yard run. TJ’s defense continued to play well, stopping the Vikings on a turnover on downs again on the Spartan side of the field. After a substantial drive, Senior quarterback Nick Lednev threw his first touchdown of the game to McAfee on a 5 yard slant route.
The big pass play continued to help the Spartans as it has all season, with two touchdowns coming on pass plays of 35 yards or more. Both throws were from Lednev to McAfee. To add insult to injury, TJ’s defense created three turnovers – two recovered fumbles and and interception – to keep the Vikings to 14 points.
TJ’s next game is against Centaurus High School, which has a deceiving 1-6 mark because they have played better than their record shows. The game is on October 19, at All City Field at 7 p.m.
