When TJ wrestlers walked into the gym at Golden High School at 7:00 a.m.
they knew that they were in for some stiff competition. “The way it worked
out was we ended up dueling against four out of the top five teams,” said
Head Couch Mike Laurita. “Having five matches was a great
way to start off the season,” he added. The wrestlers lost only two matches against East and Berthoud out of five, and as an overall team finished in fourth place.
The results were as follows:
Cheyenne Mountain 39- 36
Berthoud 36-39
Jefferson 48-27
Golden 42-40
East 36-37
With both their losses very close in score, TJ wrestlers feel they have what it takes. “Now we know what to work on and how we need to improve,” said Senior Wrestler Corey Hernandez. “Losing to East by one point is disappointing. I know my team can do it, and they’re one
of our biggest competitors,” added Hernandez.
Team Captain Layth Dieyleh said, “I’m excited for the season and I can’t wait; it’s going to be good.” Dieyleh beat the #1 ranked wrestler in the state, Bobby Amound, from Cheyenne Mountain, by decision. “It was a great moment for me and it just proves anything’s possible,” he said.
