After a well-deserved break, the Spartan Swimmers are back in the water.
Since being back from break, the girls’ swim team has had two meets; the first one against Englewood, and the second, a tri-meet, against George Washington and South.
On January 10th, the Englewood Pirates came over to the TJ pool for the Spartans’ first meet of the New Year. It was their last home meet for the season, meaning it was senior night. Our girls came out with the victory with a score of 119 to 56. A majority of the girls came in first place in the meets. The first place winners were Junior Sarah Orr in the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Backstroke, Junior Tatiana Gerlits in the 100 Breaststroke, Sophomore Angelica Hawley in the 200 IM, Junior Cassie Kah in the 200 Freestyle and the 50 Freestyle, and Senior Juliana Alford in the 500 Freestyle. In addition, three of TJ’s relay teams defeated Englewood. Orr, Gerlits, Hawley, and Sophomore Savannah Orth placed first in the 200 Medley Relay and Orr, Gerlits, Hawley, and Kah placed first in the 200 Freestyle Relay. The senior relay team, consisting of Seniors Rachel Uyemura, Dakota Trammel, Alford, and Hawley also came in first in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Head Coach Cindy Allen commented on how well the girls performed at the meet. “They’ve been working really hard and taking instruction very well,” explained Allen. “They’ve been perfecting their techniques so they did a really good job at the meet.”
Their second meet of the New Year, a league meet against George Washington and South, was on January 16th, where they placed third overall. Against GW, the score was 149 to 30, and against South, the score was 102 to 59. “It was a tough meet but the girl swam very well,” stated Allen, who said she decided to mix things up a little at the meet due to the large number of club swimmers both GW and South have. “We thought we would swim some different stuff and mix it up so when they see us at City, we won’t be the swimming the same events that we did in this meet.” This meet was their last regular meet of the season; their next meet will be the City Meet. “It was a good meet over all,” said Allen.
The City Meet will be held at Manual High School on February 1st. It is against all of the DPS teams, so be sure to show your support to the Lady Swimmers.
