TJ prevails 66-59 on South’s “Pack-the-House Night”.

Prizes were given, dances were performed at halftime, and a large gathering of South Rebel faithful flocked to watch the highly anticipated TJ-South boys’ basketball match-up on South’s “Pack-The-House-Night” on Friday.
Unfortunately for the Rebel enthusiasts, it would take more than off-court excitement to overthrow the Spartans, who came into the game on a four-game winning streak and with a record of 11-4. Prior to the meeting with TJ, South had been excelling as well, posting a record of 12-3 and was on a six-game winning streak of its own.
TJ started the game off with intensity and dashed off to a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter South matched TJ’s level of play, chipping at the lead and stifling the Spartans, holding them to only nine points. At halftime the score was 31-24 Spartans, and the game was starting to match the hype it had going in.
South continued its great defensive play in the third quarter, but began to find a rhythm in the offensive end as well. The Rebels scored 20 points in the third and cut the Spartan lead to 45-44.
The fourth quarter was no place for those who dislike slow, free-throw abundant basketball. The two teams combined for 40 free-throws in the fourth quarter alone, TJ shooting 15-24 for 62.5%. Chris Carter landed 9 out of 10 from the charity stripe, and continues to be a consistent free-throw shooter for TJ.
But for TJ the standout performer was Junior Seborne Harris. Harris scored all of his 11 points in the second half and accompanied that with six rebounds and two blocks. Harris was also the only player on either team who seemed to be able to score without shooting free-throws.
“It was an amazing game,” Harris said. “I loved the intensity. I think it was our defense that made the difference. Everybody kept going.” (Rocky Mountain News)
By the end of the fourth the Spartans were pulling away and would hang on to oust the Rebels 66-59. The high scorers for the Spartans were Carter with 18 and Ray Riley with 16.
TJ continues divisional play Tuesday, January 27, at 7 pm against North at TJ.
