The spring basketball season kicked off on April 7.
Mr. TJ has come and gone, and this year the Spartan Hoop Squad will be having a little competition of their own, as they will be crowning the first annual TJ Basketball “Spring King”.
Starting every Tuesday and Thursday from three until five, the boys will be hard at work in the gym doing an array of activities from weightlifting, to drills, to scrimmages with each other. The way the “Spring King” will be chosen is that the players will scrimmage, and depending on whether or not a player’s team wins, he will receive points. Points will also be awarded by how many baskets his team defeats the opposing team by. “It will sort of be like hockey’s plus-minus system,” commented Head Coach Grant Laman.
The scoring system is not completely worked out, but what is known for sure is that there will be 17 games played over the season, and players will be chosen at random and coached by either Laman or Assistant Head Coach Morgan Gregory. “I am looking forward to the spring season. I have some things that I want to improve on, and the spring league is a great place to start,” said Junior Forward Seborne Harris.
The league will be open to anyone who is interested in playing and is not participating in a sport this spring. “We always have to have off-season workouts for the players; it’s all part of improving your skills as a basketball player. I believe that we have enough quality guys in our program that we don’t need to play with any other schools,” said Head Coach Grant Laman.
It should be known that the league is free to everyone and there is no physical needed to play. The only stipulation is that you are either a freshman, sophomore, or junior, as no seniors will be allowed to participate. Eligibility will not play a factor, so don’t let that deter you from coming out and being prepared to work hard, play ball, have a good time, and improve yourself. “Come on come all!” says Laman.
