Spartans gear up for another homecoming week filled with school spirit followed by an enchanted evening.
With school shifting into high gear, students are preparing for the annual homecoming football game and dance, preceded by a spirit week which has been organized by Thomas Jefferson’s Leadership class. Students and Leadership teachers Jon Poole and Erin Thompson have worked tirelessly since the beginning of the school year to set up TJ’s 2017 homecoming theme, Enchanted Kingdom.
Leading to the day of the dance, which will be held on September 16th, students are able to participate in spirit week, in which they can express their creativity and show spirit for their school. In order to follow the dance’s theme, Leadership has created a Disney-themed spirit week. Monday is Monsters’ Inc. Day, Tuesday is Jungle Book Day, and Wednesday is Cinderella Day. During lunch on Wednesday, the homecoming royalty will be announced, with students casting their votes on the day of the dance. Thursday is Incredibles Day, and during the extended lunch junior and senior girls will participate in the annual Powderpuff football game. Friday has a shortened schedule, and students are asked to dress in all TJ gear to attend the homecoming pep rally, which will include the tradition of a performance by the Hot Boys as well honoring each fall sport. On the morning of September 16th, the TJ Spartan football team will compete against Alameda High School at 11:00 a.m. at All City Field. Following the game is the dance held at TJ that evening, where the homecoming king and queen will be announced.
Spirit week is designed so that students are able to show their school spirit, become involved, and have a week of fun in the middle of a sometimes stressful return to school. Leadership student and senior Molly Little explained, “We want all students to join in on spirit week because it shows our sense of community and demonstrates how we truly are one big family here at TJ.” Happy Homecoming, Spartans!
