The Spartan boys’ soccer team reached a three game winning streak by beating Conifer High School 2-0, but couldn’t sustain momentum losing to Smoky Hill High School 7-1.

On Tuesday, September 11th the Spartan boys’ soccer team beat Conifer High School, but Thursday, September 13, they lost to Smoky Hill High School.
Coming off two good wins, the boys found themselves with all the momentum going in, to playing Conifer. A goal late in the first half by Junior George Jighere led to a 1-0 lead at half. Early in the second half, Jighere found the net with a breakaway goal to put the spartans up 2-0. “I gotta give big ups to everyone. We all played great and had fun, along with a big win,” said Senior Tyler Moehlman.
The win put the team at 3-1 on the season. Going into the game on Thursday, Smoky Hill was their toughest opponent yet. Smoky Hill looked strong from the start and scored three goals to lead at half 3-0. With another four goals from Smoky Hill, and one from Spartan Sophomore Jose Sanchez, the game ended with the Spartans losing 7-1. “ It was a disappointing game, but we learned it’s about going out there and trying your best,” stated Senior Nathan Gengler.
The split games on the week puts the team’s record at 3-2 on the season. Homecoming week is up next and the boys face two of the toughest teams in the state. First, the Spartans play Abraham Lincoln High School on Wednesday, September 19 at TJ at 4:00 p.m. Then on Friday, September 21, the boys take on defending 5A state champions, Denver East High School at TJ at 4:00 p.m.
