Varsity soccer boys take their first win of the season against Montebello, however fall to Standley Lake 2-0.
On a gloomy Wednesday afternoon, the Varsity Soccer team stepped on Spartan turf to take on the Montebello Warriors, coming out with a win of 3-1.
After a tough first half, the boys finally got their stuff together and showed the Warriors up with three goals. The first goal was scored by Junior Gabe Da Silva, leaving the score temporarily at 1-0. Not long after, Senior Freddy Contreras put one away as well. Finally, Senior Jayson Da Silva scored a third and very deserved goal after two assists.
“A good thing was we got to put in some of the guys who don’t normally get a chance to play. It gave the team good practice and let them really work together,” said Varsity Coach Jon Poole. The win gave the Spartans some confidence, and although they were off to a slow start, the boys came back and dominated.
Unfortunately, the momentum did not stick with the boys in thier next game as they fell to Standley Lake High School 2-0 two days later, on Friday September 24th. A goal was given up in the first half, instigating a bit of frustration among the team. The boys managed to hold the score at 1-0 for most of the second half, however another goal was scored by Standley Lake within the last minutes of the game. “The Homecoming activities were definitely a distraction. Our boys just couldn’t focus, and that killed us,” said Poole with a shrug.
Hopefully the team has better luck as they take on rival East High School today at 5:30 p.m. at East. Be sure to get there and cheer the boys on for a victory.
