The boys’ won their first game of the season, defeating Grandview 75-62.
The Spartans came out of the gates flying Tuesday night as they opened up the season with a tough 5A opponent in the Grandview Wolves. Fortunately for the Spartans, they came out well prepared and controlled the entire game.
Offensively, the Spartans were led by Senior Guard Ray Riley who was recently named a player to watch in 4A by the Denver Post. The Spartans would end up taking a 33-28 lead going into the half. However, TJ would come into the third quarter feeling rejuvenated as they would end up outscoring the Wolves by 11 in the period to take a commanding 16 point lead, capped of by a Deontae Fair three-point buzzer beater to conclude the quarter. “Coach gave me the green light to shoot. That’s what I did and shots were falling,” said Fair with a smile. “I was feeling it. Looked up at the clock with two seconds left, shot it up, and it went in,” Fair added.
After holding off a late push from the Wolves, TJ was able to win by a final score of 75-62. “Just happy with a W to start the season. Did we close it out with the best? No. But we got the win and we did enough. We’ll take it,” said Head Coach Grant Laman. The Spartans will next be in action on Thursday night, as they will take on the winner of the Heritage Fairview game in the second round of the Tip-off Classic.
