Spartan defense has best outing of the year, but TJ still suffers loss to Lakewood.
TJ Senior Cornerback Latrell McLennan had two interceptions and the defense had two forced fumbles recovered, but the TJ offense wasn’t able to score enough, and lost 33-7 to the Lakewood Tigers.
For the last five games, the Spartan Football Team has been singing the same tune of great defense, little offense. Starting Junior Quarterback Nick Lednev said, “Our defense played a great game, but the offense couldn’t get our team over that hill.” The defense held a good Lakewood team to only ten points in the first half. They got into the backfield and disrupted the option play that the Tigers execute so well. The second half looked promising for the Spartans to get their first win of the season.
But, the second half didn’t go nearly as smoothly as the first. The defense became tired when they had to run back onto the field after a short rest each possession. Senior Captain Luke Fabian said, “Watching our defense in the first half and most of the third quarter, it looked like it could be one of the best in the state. Our offense just needs to stay on the field.” TJ was able to score when tight end Deondre Kary was wide open at the ten yard line, and walked into the endzone after an easy catch.
The Spartans head to practice this week with an offensive emphasis. They play the Abraham Lincoln Lancers on October 6th at All City Field at 4 p.m.
