With the Montbello victory, the TJ Girls’ Hoop Squad has renewed hope for playoffs.
On Thursday, February 9, the Lady Spartan Basketball Team beat Montbello 46-32 for the first time in five years. The girls came out hot and jumped on top, and kept the lead for the whole game. “We played intense defense, denied and contested each shot,” said Varsity Assistant Coach, Kyler Jackson. The girls kept Montebello to only 17 first half points.
When the second half came the intensity was apparent between both teams. With 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter the referees called off the game because of a parent brawl in the stands. The Spartans had to be escorted onto the bus right away for safety reasons. “We kept our composure, we played well the whole game and we didn’t want to lose it all in the last seconds of our game,” said Senior Becca Randall, who had 16 points, 13 rebounds, and six steals.
The girls, who improved their record to 9-10, hope to get a seed in the playoffs. Averaging 39 points, 26 rebounds, and four assists per game the girls hope to go far in a playoff run. “We have a lot of potential. I’m excited to see how all this unfolds,” said Randall. Montbello girls’ basketball dropped their record to 5- 12.
The Spartans have West on Friday February, 10, and Lincoln on Tuesday, February 14.
