Celebrating the career of the Rockies’ beloved outfielder Charlie Blackmon.
September 29th 2024, marked the end of an era in Colorado sports history. During Charlie Blackmon’s 3,456th and last-ever career plate appearance, Rockies fans sang “Your Love” by The Outfield, Blackmon’s walk-up song, one final time.
Charlie Blackmon, affectionately known as “Chuck Nazty,” has been a foundation of the Colorado Rockies for 14 years. Blackmon’s career is filled with remarkable achievements and unforgettable moments that will forever leave a mark on Rockies fans and the wider baseball community. Drafted by the Rockies in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft, Blackmon quickly made a name for himself with his impressive skills and work ethic, which eventually led him to his MLB debut on June 7, 2011. Over the years, he became known for his consistent hitting, speed on the bases, and pristine defense. Blackmon’s career is filled with numerous highlights that have endeared him to Rockies fans. In 2017, he won the National League batting title with a .331 batting average, showcasing his ability to hit for average and power. It’s also no coincidence that he put up some of the best numbers in his career in 2017 and 2018, the two years the Rockies reached a postseason berth for the first time since 2009.
While Charlie Blackmon’s leadership skills have led the Rockies to past success, he is individually one of the greatest players to ever play for Colorado. He is the Rockies’ all-time leader in triples with 68, and he ranks among the top players in games played, runs, hits, doubles, and total bases. His leadership and positive attitude have made him a beloved figure in the clubhouse and a role model for younger players.
While stats and records represent a great part of Blackmon’s footprint in the Mile High City, there is one thing the Rockies will struggle to replace: the noise. It might sound ridiculous, and you really have to experience a game at Coors Field to understand it, but when the lyrics “Josie’s on a vacation far away…” starts playing over the sound system, the ballpark comes alive. Fans stop doing what they’re doing and watch. There’s no other way to put it: Rockies fans love Charlie Blackmon.
“Toni-i-i-i-ight” was the roar of 48,395 fans witnessing his last game in a sold out Coors Field. He hit his 1,805th career hit, a base hit that earned him his last standing ovation as he walked off the field for the last time, surrounded by his teammates and family.
His impact in the clubhouse isn’t limited to inside the chalk lines. Off the field, Blackmon has been involved in various charitable activities, giving back to the community and supporting causes close to his heart, such as working hospitals around the state to put a smile on younger fans and contributing to the Taylor Hooton Foundation. His dedication to making a difference has further solidified his status as a true Colorado icon.
As Charlie Blackmon embarks on the next chapter of his life, Rockies fans will always remember him as one of the greatest players to don the purple pinstripes. His contributions to the team and Colorado’s community have left an enduring legacy that will be remembered for generations to come. While his playing days may be over, his impact on Colorado sports and the hearts of Rockies fans will never fade.
