Ben Haggerty, more commonly known as Macklemore, was raised in Seattle and has developed into an incredible artist, with a different sound than any other hip-hop artist today. Macklemore has incredible rhymes and clever flow. That alone is not enough to create music, so he decided to team up with musician Ryan Lewis. Lewis not only creates electronic beats but also plays piano, bass, guitar, and drums.

This duo has created many incredible singles, and have just finished making their album, The Heist, available for pre-order on the fourth of September, and releasing on the seventh of October. However, their most recent work is the single, Thrift Shop. The inspiration of this song was to influence listeners to separate themselves from expensive brands and find a more “thrifty” way live. Macklemore and Lewis’s premier video had nearly 1.4 million views on YouTube within the first week of being released, and has been climbing rapidly since.

The video displays the artists’ sense of humor and comical sense of fashion. The intro starts with Ben Haggerty wearing a huge fur coat on a scooter, being pushed by two women wearing 80’s clothing and a DeLorean pulls up. Ryan Lewis opens the door and emerges with a similar fur jacket. Ben constantly mentions, “I’ma take your grandpa’s style.” From this quote, one can infer that he feels that modern fashion has become too expensive and lacks creativity.

Overall, this single is very catchy and funny, which makes it easy to keep playing time after time. I would highly recommend buying this song,  promptly after watching the music video.

On a side note, the upcoming album is going to be a flashback to when music really meant something. This was the whole idea on the packaging and the contents; however, I will go into more detail in my review once it has been released. The duo are sure to deliver with many “never been done” songs.
