TJ keeps it close in first half, but lose Angels in second half
Senior quarterback Brandon Gonzales continued to impress, but the Spartans defense couldn’t stop the Angels’ attack, and lose the game 43-20.
The Spartans came out of the locker room fired up to beat East after the debacle in the parking lot earlier that day. East was playing for their Homecoming. Both were foaming at the mouth to get a victory. The Spartans got the ball first in the game and scored an impressive touchdown. Senior Running Back Raycell Rush appeared to be down at the Angels’ 40 yard, but got back on his feet and scored a touchdown. East had to respond before the game got out of their hands.
The Angels did respond, in a big way. They handed the ball off to their star running back Shahid Hoover and he cut through the TJ defense. As soon as he bounced outside of the tackles, the play was out of the Spartans’ hands and they scored a quick six. TJ really had the wind taken out of their sails when they turned the ball over in the redzone. Gonzales threw a backwards pass to senior wide receiver Antonio Clark and Clark couldn’t corral it. Chad Hanna of East scooped the ball and took it to the 48 yardline, after a penalty brought it back. East scored on that possession, and all of a sudden the TJ players were out of the game. East took control of the remainder of the contest.
TJ has to respond with a win next week if they want to have any hopes of recovering this season. They play Montbello on Sat. Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at All City Stadium.
