On a cold Saturday afternoon, the Spartans played a close game with Holy Family, but found themselves on the losing end 17-14, as they fall to a record of 3-3.

The game time temperature was a mere 37 degrees, and its affects showed early. Both TJ and Holy Family started slowly on offense and were plagued by turnovers and failed third down conversions. Holy Family was able to score first on a chip shot field goal and had a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Holy Family ran an offensive look new to TJ: the triple option. Holy Family Quarterback, David Somers, would line up with a running back on either side and have three options: handing the ball off, keeping the ball for a run, or throwing the ball down field. This showed as TJ’s defense looked baffled at first, but was able to adjust in the second half. At the half, the score was 10-0 in favor of Holy Family.

TJ came out in the second half with more urgency than that of the first. The offense scored early in the third with a one-yard touchdown run by Sheik Kamara, after the defense got a fumble recovery down at the five yard line of Holy Family. The game was now only a three point game going into the fourth 10-7, with Holy Family still in the lead. The Spartans took the lead briefly in the fourth quarter after a Cyrus Brown one yard touchdown run. With only five minutes to go, Holy Family’s work was cut out for them. They marched down the field very methodically, and Somers ran in for the go ahead, and eventually game-winning, score and Holy Family went up 17-14.

This was the first league game for the Spartans, and they have a chance to make up in the standings vs. North on Friday, October 4th, at All City Field at 4 p.m. North is another league team and boasts a record of 1-5.
