Spartans Go 2-1

The Spartan Basketball team defeats Cherokee Trail, but falls to Cheyenne Mountain.

The Spartan Basketball team went up against back-to-back opponents this week coming out with a win against Cherokee Trail on Wednesday, December 8th, and a loss against Cheyenne Mountain on Thursday, December 9th.

In the first game, the team faced off against a very talented 5a Cherokee Trail team and came out with a dominant win and final score of 68-49. Senior Guard Wesley Price had yet another standout performance and looks to be in top shape even this early in the season. Also, Sophomore Forward Eric Andres was a powerful presence in the paint and led the team in points with 21. New addition to the team, Jordan Roland also contributed heavily to the teams scoring total with 15 of the teams 68 points.

For the second game, it seemed like the wins would keep tallying up for the Spartan Basketball team. The team was ahead on the scoreboard for most of the game and kept the game neck-and-neck with a tough Cheyenne Mountain Indians crew. However, the momentum seemed to shift out of TJ’s favor at some point in the 3rd quarter and it was a slippery slope downward from there as the Indians took the lead, and the win in the end. “It was really frustrating to not be able to close out the game and finish strong. That is one thing we will have to work on to be successful this year,” said Senior Guard Grant Maloney. The final score of this one was 66-52 in favor of Cheyenne Mountain.

The team looks to keep their winning record alive as they face off tonight and tomorrow night in the Rebel Invite at South High School.  The first game will be Friday December 10th, at South at 3:30 p.m., so make sure to be in attendance.
