Winter break is a perfect time to help out around the community.

As the first semester winds down, TJ Spartans prepare for a much needed break. However, with almost three weeks of no school, some students may be wondering how to spend their free time. Luckily there are plenty of ways to kick off the holiday break before heading to school again in the new year. Community service is an important element in the Spartan community and is a valued experience. TJ Spartans are required to have 40 hours of logged community service in order to graduate. If students are in need of community service hours, there will be plenty of opportunities to score some extra hours over the long break.

One of the many volunteer opportunities is at the Blossoms of Light exhibit at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Volunteers are needed nightly from now until January 2, 2016. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older, and will assist with taking tickets and managing lines.   Another opportunity is for the Trail of Lights at the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield Farms. Both of these great opportunities are looking for friendly welcoming people who have great customer service skills. These volunteering opportunities can help students feel festive and have fun while helping the community. For more information visit Danny Showers in room 108.

Besides Volunteering with the Botanic Gardens, there are many other ways help spread the holiday spirit. The Denver Soup Kitchen is always looking for volunteers to help serve around the holiday season. The Denver Soup Kitchen is a great establishment that helps to feed Denver’s homeless and poor population, and can be an extremely rewarding place to volunteer. Food Bank of the Rockies is always looking for volunteers, not just for the holiday, but year round. Food Bank of the Rockies provides food to many by providing canned goods and other food necessities. Volunteers must schedule a time, and would help sort food donations as well as hand out the canned goods. If interested, students can read more about any of these volunteer opportunities here.

Holidays are centered around giving and bringing cheer. Make the holiday break mean something by volunteering time to those who need it most. There are always multiple opportunities to give back to the Denver community.
