The girls swim team has begun their season with a good start.
With already four meets under their belt, the girls swim season is in full swing.
The girls had their most recent competition in the Denver Public League Relay meet, in which they placed 5th. Although there were many new swimmers competing in their first relay meet, Head Coach Cindy Allen was impressed. “Even though we had a couple disqualifications, everyone swam very well.”
In their meet against Sierra High School in Colorado Springs, the Spartan Swimmers ended with a victory. “It was an interesting meet,” said Allen. There were many girls who placed first, including Senior Juliana Alford in the 200 Freestyle, Junior Tatiana Gerlits in the 100 Breaststroke, Junior Sarah Orr in the 100 Backstroke, Junior Cassandra Kah in the 50 Freestyle, and Sophomore Carmen Hernandez in diving. In addition, all of TJ’s relay teams placed first.
Just days before the meet against Sierra, the girls had their first DPL Pentathlon. It was an inaugural meet for the DPL. All eight DPS schools competed, along with Saint Mary’s Academy. The girls were able to choose to swim either a short course or a long course, but could not swim both. The short track was 50 yards a stroke plus a 100 IM. The long track is 100 yards a stroke and 200 IM. In order to be considered for a team score, swimmers had to swim all five events in their track. The Spartans fell short, and the George Washington Patriots took the victory with East and St. Mary’s finishing out the top three spots.
Lastly, the first meet of the season can’t go unseen. The girls competed in a tri-meet against rivals Lincoln and East, coming in second place. The Lady Spartans defeated Lincoln, but were unable to pass the Angels. Although the meet consisted of three teams, it was considered a “Triple Dual,” where each team is only scored against one other team.
The Spartan Fish will travel to North on Wednesday, December 12th to face the Vikings in a Dual Meet. Start time is set for 4:15 p.m. so be sure to support our athletes!
