The TJ Boys’ Hoop Squad fell to the George Washington Patriots on Friday night by a score of 68-45.
From the get go it appeared that the Spartans did not come out with the fire that it takes to beat any major conference opponent. The Spartans struggled scoring early, and were down by a score of 7-0 before many of the fans could even take their seats in the well packed Manual Thunder-Dome, where the game was played. The Spartans trailed 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.
“You can’t start bad to good teams. Maybe that was a sign, I don’t know. I do know we missed our first five free throws and just never seemed to get on track,” stated Head Coach Grant Laman. (Rocky Mountain News)
The game continued to go south for the Spartans in the second quarter as the Patriots nearly quadrupled the Spartans’ points, outscoring TJ 15-4. The Spartan boys trailed by 23 at halftime, and unfortunately were just never able to climb back into the game. Patriot Senior Forward Thomas Bropleh led all scorers with 25 points. Patriot guard Tyrelle Millard was unstoppable from beyond the arc, converting on four three-point field goals.
TJ’s few bright spots were Juniors Zach Jackson and Billy Sprague, who scored 12 and 10 points respectively. Both also attacked the glass relentlessly and showed good heart throughout the duration of the game.
The TJ boys’ hoopers will look to return to their winning ways on Tuesday, February 17 when they take on the rival Montbello Warriors. The game will start at 7 pm at Montbello, so try to come out and support the boys.
