Track team hosts their own meet at All city Stadium and came out with impressive results.
On Friday, May 4th, TJ hosted its own track meet, TJ Twilight II, at All City Stadium. In total 32 schools showed up, eight athletes qualified for state, and records were set.
The TJ twilight meet was to determine if runners will go to state, and many did in the open events. The open events for men are 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 100 hurtles, 400 meter dash, 800 meter dash, 1 mile run and 2 mile run, and some boys qualified for state. Seniors, Jamal Shields, Nate Brewer, Latrell McLenan, Malcom Wilkinson, and sophomore, Abajah Cannonier all are competing at state at the Jeff Co Stadium on May 17-19. “Competing at state for some of these guys shouldn’t be hard since some of them are already ranked in state,” said Coach Bonner.
Jamal Shields is number one in state for the 100 meter dash, and Abajah is ranked 7th in state for the 100 meter dash, and the relay team is top 10 in state. “Our team this year is really good, and we have a lot of hard workers, and at the city meet we’re hoping to have more people qualify,” said Bonner. At city, it will determine who goes to state by the top 18 times, in each event.
For women, the open events were the, girls sprint medley, 4 by 1, 4 by 2, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 300 meter dash, and 400 meter dash. Some of the girls who qualified are Vannesa Gilispe, Teyowna Debose, Mallory Baker and Asia Bastian. “I think this season has been great. It’s my last year and I’m ready to do really good at state,” said Debose, who got her personal best record 50.2 seconds for the 300 hurtles.
TJ hosted one of the biggest meets in the state, and qualified some schools for the national level. “It just goes to show how well organized it was, and thanks to the coaches who made it possible, Varsity Coach, Dave Cohen, and Assistant Varsity Coaches Damian Allen, Wendy Doyle, and Ivory Allen,” said Bonner.
Be sure to cheer your Spartans on at the city meet at all city stadium May 11 and May 12!
