The track team sums up their season with the state-qualifying meet.
At the state-qualifying meet, Abijah Cannonear was the city champion in the 200-meter run, making him a state qualifier for the state meet on Thursday May 16th. Corbin Sells took first place in the 110-meter hurdles, and second place in the discus-throw. The boys’ team took second place in the 4 by 2 run, and third place in the 4 by 1 run. Dawite Woldu took fourth in the 800-meter run, which is half-a-mile of full sprinting. His brother Abraham Woldu proved talent runs throughout the family when he took first place in the long jump, and second place in the triple jump. Ryan Potter was also recognized as he was named the MVP of the boys’ track team.
As for the girls’ team, Brooklyn York managed to take sixth place in the 100-meter run, Baylee Haynie won third place in the triple jump, and Asia Areliano won sixth place in the 400-meter run. The three girls also took third place in the sprint medley. “I was very impressed with how we did, considering how many runners we had. I couldn’t be more proud of how they did especially because they went up against such hard competition with up to 20 contenders in each event,” says Coach Woody Bonner.
Abijah Cannonear was the only member of the track team who qualified for state, but Corbin Sells came so close, when 1/10th of a second separated him from qualifying for state. “The season was truly a good one, and now I am just looking forward to next season; I think we’re going to be unstoppable,” said Woody.
Asia Areliano, who has won first place in several of her meets says, “My favorite event is the 400, which is a full lap of sprinting. I think the coaches have done a great job this year. The coaches treat you like a family, so the whole team is like one big family. I have definitely learned a lot this year, and I feel a lot stronger since the start of the season.”
