This article is a summary of the Spring 2025 Boys Volleyball season.

Three years ago, Boys’ Volleyball was brought to the Thomas Jefferson community, and since then it has become a critical part of the school’s culture. During the first year, there were barely enough athletes to sustain two teams, but the team has grown significantly since then. Zane Bath, a junior and setter on the Varsity team remarks that, in the past, some varsity members were swinging to play on the JV team in order to make sure that they were able to play. However, all of that has changed this season.

The 2025 team is currently ranked 50th in the state, and has improved significantly from the first year, where they were seated at 64th for Colorado. Bath attributes this to the amount of practice that they are getting now. When the sport had just started, “everybody was really just just a beginner and nobody really knew what they were doing last year or my freshman year. So, this year is just nice to see that we have practice,” explained Bath. The team practices every day in the gym unless they have a match, so it makes sense that they have gotten better. In fact, the team has just moved up to division 5A, which is the highest division for high school sports.

However, the change in division has caused challenges of its own, as being in a higher division means playing better teams. This puts TJ at a disadvantage since it is still a new sport to most of the players. On the other hand, Bath says that the season has been going well anyway. Another challenge that the team has faced is registration. Compared to what it could be, the program is still pretty small. Bath remarked on this by saying, “I feel like a big problem with it is that a lot of people consider it a girl sport.” This means that some people might be afraid to join it and miss out on something that they might really enjoy. Bath recommends that everyone joins, even if they are scared at first. Volleyball is for everyone, after all. He is hopeful that people will continue to join the team and support it as much as they have in the past three years.

The setter says that the team has really grown together and gotten to know each other. In addition to this, volleyball is also a great way to meet new people or be involved with something at TJ. It is also an excellent sport to pursue for college scholarships and teams because it isn’t very widespread yet, and therefore not as competitive as other sports like football or basketball. Although the team is losing some critical seniors next year, as long as more people sign up, the TJ Boys’ Volleyball team will continue to be a huge part of the community and continue to be set up for success.
