Kiera Classen and other TJ Journal staffers gets involved in Your Hub section of the Denver Post.
The Denver Post’s, Your Hub Community Manager, Kayla Albert’s visit to the TJ Journal staff last semester led to many successes, including TJ’s very own Senior, Kiera Classen winning the paper’s photo contest during winter break.
YourHub is a community-based section of the Denver Post that prints 10 different and distinct editions zoned for communities across the Denver metro area. Each section consists of neighborhood news, event information and Prep sports. The Denver Post distributes over 250,000 copies to 10 metro area zones every Thursday.
During winter break, Kiera Classen’s photo, “The Boyz” was announced winner of the photography contest in the Denver area. The picture was of the rodeo, taken at the Denver Stock Show. “I named my picture, ‘The Boyz’ because the illusion that the photo creates with the cowboys and the fading horse in the background was really interesting to me,” said Classen. “My family inspired me in every way, ever since I was a little kid I really liked photography and I’m hoping to get my own camera soon,” added Classen. She submitted 10 photographs and “The Boyz,” was the lucky winner. “I’ve gotten a lot of recognition for that picture, and I love it,” said Classen, who also received $200 and a spot in the YourHub section online. “I was really excited when I saw my name under best photography of the Denver area; it really meant a lot to me.”
Other members of the Journal staff have also made many submissions to YourHub: Matthew Fabian, Mallory Baker, Rebecca Hansen, Aviva Getschel, and Ed Gloor have all had their work published in the hard-copy edition.
Junior Matthew Fabian wrote an article on the dedication ceremony for Dr. Herman Motz, uploaded it on YourHub and saw his article in print the following Thursday. “I worked hard on that article and I was excited to see it on YourHub. I’m glad I covered that story, because it was a momentous day in TJ’s History,” said Fabian, Editor of the Sports section for The Journal.
Aviva Getschel, another staff member of The Journal, had an article printed on YourHub as well. Aviva, who was most excited about her article being published, kept it a secret from her family to surprise them. “I was super excited about my first article in print,” Getschel said. “My father has had a few articles published on YourHub, so he was excited to see my article in print,” she added.
Kierra Classen and the Journal staff continues to impress the Denver Post with the articles and the pictures submitted. “I was incredibly impressed by the submissions I received from the TJ Journal staff. In fact, after the contest was over, my managing editor made a comment about how the writing he saw from TJ was better than some of the writing he’d seen from people interviewing for jobs at The Denver Post. And that, obviously, says a lot,” added Albert.
