The Fall Concert is the perfect occasion for choir students to perform what they have worked on in class, so this unforgettable event is not one that Spartans will want to miss.

On October 9th at 7:00 p.m. the choir students will have a chance to demonstrate their talents during the Fall Concert. Due to construction, Slavens Middle School students will be joining TJ choir singers during the concert. “The Slavens students will be singing with advanced choir. Including the Slavens students, so there will be about 120 Spartans and future Spartans,” said Choir Director, Edwina Hebert.
“There will be a wide variety of music including pop and jazz. The Fall Concert is the perfect opportunity for all of the TJ community to see what the choir students are capable of. It will give us a chance to showcase what we have been working on,” said Hebert.
Choir has always been a significant asset to any high school; it gives students the opportunity to express themselves and communicate their thoughts and emotions to an audience through their voice.
This year, Edwina Hebert returned to TJ with the determination to assist all of her students in order to improve TJ’s choir program. “I’m super excited to be back and use all the skills I learned last year!” said Hebert when asked how she felt about being back at TJ. Hebert’s return to TJ is guaranteed to be a memorable one.
Hebert’s singing career began when she was six months old. Her enthusiasm to sing and teach encouraged her to become a choir teacher. Hebert attended CU Boulder and graduated in 2004 with a music education degree. This past year Hebert spent her time in the school for Music Vocations. “I was away in Iowa studying in a jazz program as well as teaching,” said Hebert.
Hebert has also been part of the band Gumbo Le Funque since June 2012. “We play in various venues around Denver pretty much every weekend,” said Hebert. She is the co-lead singer as well as the keyboardist in this New Orleans funk style band.
Hebert has shared her singing talent with many of the students here at TJ. Ashley Fulkerson, a Monticello singer for the TJ choir, says, “Working with Hebert is really exciting! She’s back and she’s ready to teach us whatever we need. She’s back with a certain fire in her eyes.” Fulkerson is eager to see what this year holds for the TJ choir as a whole. “I think everybody is really excited but nervous to see what this year is going to bring for Monticello and all the other choirs,” she said.
As a member of Monticello, Fulkerson had to undergo a try-out in order to see if she was capable of performing in the top Spartan singing group. According to Hebert, “Students must go through an extensive audition that takes place during spring.” After the audition, the students who make it into the Monticello group, as well as all the other choir classes, exhibit their singing abilities throughout various school choir concerts.
