A new center at TJ has established a place for welcoming students and provides extra workspace.
At the beginning of November, the counseling office underwent a renovation with the goal of creating a more welcoming environment equipped with computers and resources for students. This is a place where students can go and get help from counselors, as well as access the provided computers.
“This is a kid-friendly center where students can interact with counselors. We can advise them with colleges, help with schedules, and assist with anything else they need. The computers are designated for their use and allow them to print out papers when needed,” said Counselor Erin Thomspon, who can be found in her office daily helping students.
The idea of the center had a very interesting origin. “It started several years ago with the introduction of Infinite Campus. We needed a location that provided help to the students as the demand from the students and parents grew,” said School Administrator Scott Lessard.
The counselors in the office pushed forward for the implementation of the center. “The counselors asked me if we could afford more computers to accommodate students. Thanks to a grant we were able to purchase new furniture and computers. The Welcoming Center allows access during all school hours,” said Lessard.
The convenient location of the Center is also a great place for prospective students and their parents to come and talk to the counselors about attending TJ. “With the help of Julie Shacklock, current students and their parents can come to the center and receive help with Naviance and IC Login if parents forgot their passwords,” said Lessard.
Everyone in the office still has the same role and had adjusted to the change. A new role has been assigned to Julie Shacklock. “I am the one that welcomes and greets the students and parents. My main goal is to answer questions to the best of my ability, and if I cannot answer them I can direct students to their counselors,” said Shacklock.
Students have already used the Welcome Center for school needs. “This new area has an amazing location. It helps a lot that it is near the counselors. When I was applying to college I asked the counselors for help and it was right there,” said Senior Stephanie Acree.
With the help of the center students get the chance to use computers and a way to print their homework. “It is a very helpful resource for students. I like that I don’t always have to go to the library and can get quick access to a computer on the main floor and print something out. This is just a handy spot for students,” said Senior Jackie Lovato.
Students can take advantage of this new center located across from the main office and use it when they need help from the counselors. “We are here to help students with any schedule issues, choosing classes, and any college questions,” said Thompson.
