Soccer star, Robin Emerson recognized for her desire to be the best.
Senior Robin Emerson is no stranger to hard work and dedication, and recently that all paid off when she was honored as the top female student athlete within the walls of TJ.
On February 19th at the DPS administrative building at 900 Grant Street, an elite group of female students were recognized for their efforts on the field and in the classroom, with the Female Outstanding Student Athlete Award. Emerson, who was nominated by TJ Athletic Director Lani Nobles, was flattered by the honor. “It was nice just to be nominated. We have so many outstanding lady student athletes, I was just happy that I was mentioned in the same group as them,” said Emerson. The senior mid-fielder for the Lady Spartan soccer team has now lettered since her freshmen year and has gotten nothing less then an A in every class while in high school. “To me my biggest accomplishment is being the Valedictorian of my class. To me that’s more special then anything else I have done,” stated Emerson.
Nobles felt very comfortable nominating Emerson. “Robin is a true leader on and off the field. She expects her best every day in every facet of her life. She leads through her silent drive, being an example for others to follow. Every coach should be so lucky to have a Robin on their squad,” she said
Emerson, along with one representative from every other DPS high school, was given a plaque and a short biography was read about each of them recounting the highlights of their careers. Among Emerson’s accomplishments were tying East her freshman year (TJ soccer has not been able to tie or beat East since), making honorable mention for all-conference, and being named as team captain. “All those things to me were significant. I have enjoyed my time on the team and the friendships I have made. This season should be an exciting and memorable one,” said Emerson.
As for college, Emerson has no doubt in her mind where she wants to go. “Definitely (Colorado School of) Mines. My brother goes there, so I am familiar with it, and it is small enough to where it’s enjoyable, on top of it being far enough away from home. It was the only school I applied to, so I am pretty excited about going there next year,” said Emerson.
But when it comes to playing soccer in college, she is still undecided. “I have talked to the head coach at Mines, and there is interest there; but when you go to college and play varsity sports, it basically consumes your life. I enjoy soccer, but not enough to make it my job in college, on top of studying, especially when I am planning to major in Engineering. It’s tough and I know it will take a lot of effort, but I love math, and it being combined with science, another one of my favorite subjects, just makes it a natural choice for me,” said Emerson
Now that Emerson has been recognized for her athletic efforts, she has added to her impressive collection of awards and scholarships. On top of the FOSA award she has won the Masonic Outstanding Junior award, a National Merit Scholar Award and was a semi-finalist for the Boettcher Award. “Each one has a special meaning to me, but this was is a little different since it is a sports related award, so that gives it a little different feeling. But they are all really special,” said a grinning Emerson.
