Over the past week, the Lady Spartans have played Vista PEAK Prep, Arvada, and George Washington, coming out with the “W” for all of them.

The latest was the big game against the Patriots on Monday, April 8th.  The girls knew that they had to come ready if they wanted to defeat their rivals, a task that hasn’t been accomplished since the spring of 2009.  The Spartans took the lead in the first half with a header by Sophomore Kelly Cordes.  When it was time for the second half, the girls continued with their intensity.  Junior Elina Laine scored two goals, making the final score 3-0.  “We played as a team and we never gave up because if we would have given up they would have come back and beat us,” said Senior Braelah McGinnis.  “It was awesome to finally beat them, especially because it’s my senior year.”

Before the GW game, the girls faced off against Arvada, who was no competition for the mighty Spartans.  The girls scored four goals in the first half and three in the second half.  Arvada went scoreless, resulting in a final score of 7-0.  Cordes scored three goals, Laine scored two goals, McGinnis scored one goal, and Sophomore Quinn Roder scored one goal.

The day before, the Lady Spartans also faced off against Vista PEAK Prep, and shut them out as well, with a victory of 10-0.  Four goals were scored in the first half, and the remaining six scored in the second half.  Sophomore Marina McGinnis, Cordes, Laine, and Roder all scored two goals each, and Freshman Blaise Hokkanen and Braelah McGinnis scored one each.

The past few games have been big wins for the girls’ soccer team.  Their next game should have been April 10th against Kennedy, but due to the weather, it will be rescheduled.
