The renowned TJ Special Education Department got creative during Earth Day 2009, demonstrating environmental awareness through a resourceful art project.

On April 22nd, in honor of Earth Day, Special Education Teacher Mollie Pitrone organized a unique art project for the TJ Special Education Students.  The activity involved plastic recyclable bags from Safeway, multi-colored pipe cleaners, and packing peanuts. The students were then given instructions on how to twist and tangle them together to make environmentally friendly baskets. The baskets can be used to carry around everyday materials, and are conducive to a healthy environment at the same time.

“It was very exciting to see them use things that they use in everyday life to make something out of the ordinary,” said Pitrone, who believes the activity was a success and that the students had an enjoyable time.  She also had to laugh when some students thought the plastic bag baskets were better suited as hats, and wore them throughout the day.

In addition to the art project, Pitrone took the opportunity to teach her students about the environment and the importance of recycling.  “I hope they learned about the significance of taking care of our earth through this art project.  It was a fun activity but I think they learned some valuable lessons as well,” said Pitrone.

The art activity was such a hit, Pitrone hopes to continue it in the future.  “We might even make them next year for the Craft Fair,” said Pitrone.
