After a complete overhaul in their lineup, new group Woe Is Me is a band to be reckoned with.

Woe Is Me was formed in 2009 and was successful at touring and producing music up until 2011. Due to personal issues and musical differences, four members left the band, leaving a small portion of members to fend for themselves. This rendered them virtually useless as a band.

In April 2012, they picked up Doriano Magliano and Brian Medley. The new line up includes: Austin Thornton, Brian Medley, Kevin Hanson, Andrew Paiano, Doriano Magliano, and Hance Alligood. They released their newest album, Genesi[s], on November 20th2012. The new beginning for this band has left large room for improvement, however, they did deliver.

The third song in the album  is one of the more noticeable ones that really starts the album off on a good note, literally. This song consists of bass guitar and catchy guitar riffs as well as a very diverse range of vocals.  As far as the lyrics go, Woe Is Me  scrutinizes and criticizes the previous members of the band who are currently in the band Issues, who are creating friction between each other with lyrics in their more recent songs as well.

Another song on the album that is very distinctive and original is Nothing Left to Lose. One aspect that is unusual about this song is that Woe Is Me created two versions of it. One features their typical rock sounding guitars and instruments that were played through amps and distortion pedals. On the other hand, they decided to compose an acoustic version of this song, as well. It consists of acoustic guitar and singing, which is a very innovative change up with the recent band member modifications. “We got a second chance and we’ve got nothing left to lose, so keep singing, oh whoaoh, whoa, whoa.” Not only are they a good rock band, but they can also perform at an astonishing level with very simplistic music composition, and merely one instrument. This song demonstrates how extensive the band’s musical talent truly is. The current lineup has undeniably found its stride; hopefully, it stays this way and won’t be altered anytime soon.

An additional song on Genesi[s] that is a very well composed piece of work is called Family First. This song refers to the current band members and their fans as their family. “You better be ready to bring us your worst, this army is our family, oh, this is our family, and family comes first.” This quote from the song supports my previous claim, as well as how they are better off without the members who were bringing down their productivity. The sound of this song is very similar to that of Nothing Left to Lose, except for the small amount of drums and electric guitar. One appealing feature to this song is that it starts off all acoustic, then it is progressively transformed into a more easygoing rock song. Overall, this song is a major success and helps restore the reputation of the band.

This album is a very innovative way to restore a band. Their perseverance and will to continue creating music from a crumbling band is truly inspiring. But to continue creating it and produce some of their most impressive work is absolutely jaw-dropping. I anticipate hearing their next album drop, but – for now – I will have to surround myself in their new and impressive sound.
