We’re Jammin’ Jamaican style on Friday night September 5th, 6pm to 9pm; it’s a time for all students at Thomas Jefferson High School in the gym to kick off the school year with a bang.
Now the questions are: what is the Jamaican Jam? Who is it for? What do I need to bring to get admission? Why is this event going on? This reporter will explain everything and will answer all questions so that the everyday Spartan can Jam, Slam, Thank you ma’am, him or herself into the Jamaican Jam this Friday night.
Who is the Jamaican Jam for? The Jamaican Jam is for everyone from freshmen to seniors who attend Thomas Jefferson High School.
What do you need to bring to get admission into the event? You will need to bring a student I.D. and four ($4) dollars for a door fee. However, if you bring a canned food item along with your student I.D. you only have to pay two dollars for admittance. The only other way you get a discount on the door fee is if you are a member of Adopt-A-Frosh, which is only open to seniors and freshman. Adopt-A-Frosh is a tradition at TJ where a senior adopts a freshman and shows him or her the way through high school as a mentor and role model. If you are a participant in the Adopt-A-Frosh, you have to be with your freshman or senior at the time of entering the building with student I.D’s, and you will both receive a discount on the door fee of only paying two dollars each. Student I.D, canned food item, freshman, and two or four dollars, those are the materials you need to get into Jamaican Jam.
Why is this event going on? This event allows the freshmen to get a taste of their first High School social event and to feel comfortable mingling with their fellow schoolmates. Also it allows the students to listen to music, dance and play the ever popular traditional volleyball where 10 teams battle each other in epic volleyball games for a big cash prize. Every team has an entrance fee of 15 dollars and a sign up list will be outside of the office Monday through Friday the week of September 1st. Sign up fast because there are only ten spots.
Why should you go? When I asked senior Asia Dorsey why she thinks students should attend the Jamaican Jam, she replied, “I feel like the Jamaican Jam is essential to the unification of our schools culture. It brings the old and the young together for a splendid time.” Dorsey also added, “It is the most enjoyable, down to earth, fun and games, all around good time for everyone.”
