With Spiderman, Batman, aliens, and another Pixar movie hitting theaters, this summer is looking up.

For many years, summer has disappointed me in the movie department.
A time made for the best movie releases Hollywood has to offer, summer is when movie makers should be firing on all cylinders. Why then have these last few summers (with 2011 being an exception) discouraged me from seeing many movies during my break? For every good movie released, there were at least ten bad movies, making for a fairly dysfunctional summer movie season. However, this summer is already exciting me, with many action-packed trailers enticing audiences everywhere, and franchise continuations on the horizon. Will this be a summer of movie redemption?
The Avengers was an incredible experience filled with action, comedy, good acting, and a cohesive plot. It brought all the things people loved from the movie preludes of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captian America: The First Avenger back, and even improved upon the formula. On the other hand, Battleship doesn’t sound nearly as impressive. I haven’t seen it, but I hear it has awesome alien tech and special effects deterred by an average plot, and terrible acting. Honestly, with a movie like The Avengers in theaters, I wouldn’t even bother seeing Battleship.
Aliens seem to be a popular theme this summer, seeing as how both The Avengers and Battleship support an alien apocalypse. Some may think this is enough aliens for one summer, but in fact two more movies soon to be released include aliens in their plot. Men in Black 3, releasing May 25, is an obvious name for an obvious movie. Continuing the quirky series with Agent J (Will Smith, Seven Pounds) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones, Captain America: The First Avenger), Men in Black 3 has Agent K disappear from existence. Agent J is the only one who knows that he is gone, and must go to the past to correct this dilemma. Men in Black 3 is looking like a pretty humorous and interesting movie. The first movie was great and the second one was okay, so I can’t wait to see how this one turns out.
On the other end of the spectrum, Prometheus – the un-official prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi horror Alien – is coming out on June 8. This movie may have aliens, but the similarities between this and the other three movies ends there. From the looks of it, it is probably more of a horror than an action movie. I am honestly pretty excited for Prometheus, and am looking forward to seeing the lost Alien chapter play out on the big screen.
In addition to all these aliens, this summer also hosts two more super hero movies. The Amazing Spiderman releasing on July 3, is a reboot to the Spiderman series that began in 2002. The trailer offers much insight on the movie, showing miles of epic web slinging action, and hints about the plot. This new Spiderman actually looks like it could blow the old Spiderman out of the water, and is supposedly more true to the comic books. I suppose only time will tell.
There is no question in my mind on what movie I am most excited about this summer, and that is The Dark Knight Rises. Releasing on July 20, The Dark Knight Rises is the final chapter to Christopher Nolan’s gritty, dark, realistic, and epic Batman trilogy. The major spotlight in this movie in the new villain, Bane. Unlike the Joker in The Dark Knight, Bane is not just a psychological threat, but also a physical one. He may lead to the downfall of Batman, and Gotham alike. This is my most important movie outing this summer, and I believe anyone who has seen the previous two needs to see this movie.
Brave is another movie that interests me this June. Continuing the yearly release of Disney and Pixar movies, Brave takes place in a fictional Norse kingdom where Viking-like people live, and magic in present. The main story revolves around a princess who is sick of the life she leads and wants to change her destiny. This movie has an interesting premise, but from what I’ve seen, the accents of the actors are really irritating. The movie will probably be good (coming from Pixar), but it never hurts to be a little skeptical.
Before this year movies were something I rarely thought about, or saw in theaters. After becoming more of a critic for said movies, I am now very interested in many movies coming out. Whether they look particularly bad or good, I now plan to see as many as I can this summer. The movies mentioned are simply a list of the ones that peak my interests the most. Hopefully, all will be stellar additions to the 2012 movie lineup.
