Thomas Jefferson art students once again received recognition in this year’s Denver Public Library’s 2009 Teen Summer Reading Bookmark and Poster Design Contest. Student winners Maggie Barbour and Daniel Mardirosian designed winning bookmark pieces to be distributed around Denver Public Schools and the library system.
Runner-ups in the contest include Erica Kokinos, Janae Stamps, and Catherine Ramirez.
Thomas Jefferson has been triumphant in the annual competition for the past four years. Mardirosian, now a junior, has been a consistent winner since freshman year. In this year’s contest, in addition to his repeated bookmark victory, he has been acknowledged with a noteworthy poster nod.
An award ceremony will be held at the Denver Public Library on May 9th, at 11a.m. featuring each of the winners. First prize entrants take home $25 gift cards, with additional rewards given to runners-up.
The entries were originally regular art assignments. Brooke Stoyer, TJ Art Department teacher, has seen successful assignments turned entries since 2003. “I’m happy to be a part of the enthusiasm,” grinned Stoyer. She smiles noting the change in reaction in her students from seeing “normal art projects” win city-wide competitions. “I’m so honored and proud for each student’s achievement,” said Stoyer.
The year’s contest theme was “Express Yourself at the Library.”
