This year brings hope and confidence to the boys’ tennis team, but their first match was with a tough competitor, the Conifer Wolves, who gave the team an insight to how hard the competition will be in class 4A tennis.

The Spartan tennis team put up a good fight against Conifer, but came out a little short of a win with the score of 1-6. The player who achieved a victory in their match was #3 singles, James Bayarsaihan. He had one of the best matches of the day, winning both sets 6-0, 6-0. “I think I played well during this match and kept up a good pace. My plan for this season is to stay consistent and win all my matches 6-0, 6-0,” he said.

The loss didn’t bring down the team spirit for the forthcoming season, as the guys seem ready to work harder on their game and improve for the upcoming matches. “The team atmosphere is great. This is a young group with high energy and high potential, but laid back. The guys are fun to practice with because they keep improving, which is nice to watch. They have a lot of potential to win State,” Head Coach Tim Cueva said with pride.

This year the team has experienced a change in both coaching and training when Coach Cueva took over. “This season I expect to push the guys to the fullest and win the city championship,” said Cueva. The squad is feeling pressure to win but they are ready to show everyone what they are made of.

“Our biggest competitors this season are East and George. I am making sure the guys are ready for these matches,” said Coach Cueva, who went on to explain that these matches are going to be tough but the team is confident that they can win.

“I’ve been practicing a lot for my match with East and I’m hoping to win against them this year!” said Bayarsaihan. The singles lineup this year consists of Senior Andrew Becker, Junior Dominic Murray, and Junior James Bayarsaihan.

The squad also has big hopes in the doubles teams: #1 doubles is Zack Robinson and Jeremy Albright; #2 doubles is Gunther Cueva and David Tourt; #3 doubles is Morgan Hoyt and Kiote Clemens; and #4 doubles is Cody Anderson and Matthew Gonzalez. “We are eager to win as many matches as possible and make it to State. Throughout the season I want to improve on my serves and accuracy,” said Sophomore Zack Robinson. This team is working hard for its next matches so it can begin its journey to State.

The next match for the tennis team is against Kennedy at TJ on September 14th at 4:00 p.m.  Be there to support the TJ Spartans!
